The 3 a.m. collision occurred when the young driver of a BMW sedan hit the back end of a 2009 Nissan. The driver of the BMW was speeding and following the other vehicle too closely at the time of the crash. Police also believe he had been drinking not long before the crash. Neither vehicle was able to stay on the highway.
The impact was powerful enough that it threw the 61-year-old driver of the Nissan from his vehicle. He was declared dead by the county coroner an hour later. The other driver was examined at a nearby hospital but was only minimally injured. He will be remanded to the local jail, where he will be facing several charges, including vehicular homicide in the first degree.
Although those responsible for fatal accidents may feel some type of remorse following the devastation they cause, it cannot compare to the grief, anger, and sorrow friends and family feel at the loss of someone who meant so much to them. Those surviving family members do have the right to seek financial compensation from the party or parties deemed responsible. A Georgia attorney who knows the laws particular to the state will be able to guide clients as they seek to exact justice in such a tragic situation.
