Drinking and driving is selfish. Many who consume alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel believe they will reach their destination without causing a car accident. Others simply do not care if they cause harm or not. Two people were injured in a car accident when a Georgia man apparently decided he would drive after drinking.
A police report was released by the responding officer after the man made a turn and entered the wrong lane, crashing into an SUV. A child and an adult in the SUV were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated. Neither had been critically injured and were released by the time the details of the report were published.
Police say the man who instigated the collision seemed to be inebriated, as it was believed he had an odor of alcohol on his breath, was slurring his words, and was unsteady on his feet. Although he complained of neck and back pain and submitted to an assessment by responding EMS personnel, he did not want to be taken to a hospital. He was not asked to perform a field sobriety test because of his injury complaints, but he did initially agree to have blood drawn for testing and later changed his mind. The officer, running a standard check on the man’s license, discovered the license had been suspended for an earlier DUI offense. After receiving a citation for a number of offenses, he was given a court date and released.
This man may be looking at jail time and fines for causing a car accident while under the influence of alcohol. He may also be facing a personal injury lawsuit from the family of the two who were injured in an effort to recoup the money they have to spend on medical bills as a result of the man’s negligence.
